Within Galician cultural tradition, legends and the supernatural hold a prominent place. As a means of protection and purification against evil spirits and meigas—the Galician name for witches—the queimada is performed: an ancient ritual involving a fiery beverage made from orujo, a traditional grape pomace spirit. Since 1989, a regulation of the European Economic Community (EEC) has recognized Galicia as the only Spanish region entitled to the Geographical Designation “Orujo de Galicia,” placing it alongside Europe’s great distillation traditions.
